If you ask a teenager what they want from their ideal job, their wish list often includes decent pay, being creative, meeting people and travelling, early responsibility and promotional opportunities. Typically, these are features of a manufacturing career yet there's this huge disconnect between the reality of working in industry and the image that people have of the sector.

Many people think that manufacturing is about standing on a production line sticking cherries on bakewells, or mindlessly processing widgets. But these perceptions are about 30 years out of date. The days of dark satanic mills are long gone: modern manufacturing is a global enterprise competing on innovation, creativity and all-round smart thinking.

The Make It in Manufacturing campaign was launched by The Manufacturing Institute in 2006 to shake off the myths and negative perceptions that surround the sector and show the outside world, particularly tomorrow's workforce and potential investors, just how much modern industry has to offer.

Make It successfully challenges the outdated perceptions.

Nearly 15,000 young people have been involved in Make It activities over the past four years. Many teenagers have set up their own mini-manufacturing businesses as part of Make It Enterprising Challenge days, while the Make It Zone at careers events such as Skills NorthWest gives pupils a chance to make hair gel, solder electronics, mould plastics, tackle robotics, and generally enjoy the challenge of making things.

It's all about demonstrating the reality of modern day industry by giving young people a chance to 'see it for real' and give them an opportunity to talk to young apprentices and graduates who are building their own exciting careers in the sector.
