Events

A key element of the Make It in Manufacturing campaign is a range of hands-on activities for young people and teachers including:

Make It Enterprising Challenges

An exciting new series of events for 2007/08 the Challenge consists of five sub-regional heats followed by a regional final. Each of these six one-day events is delivered with the sponsorship and support of a manufacturing partner. To date four heats have taken place; in Lancashire with Aircelle, in Merseyside with Jaguar Land Rover, in Cumbria with McBride and in Cheshire with Flowcrete. The next heat will be in Greater Manchester whilst the regional final is scheduled to take place early in 2008.

“Wow, what a great day! I had such a motivated team following their involvement in the Challenge, the energy and enthusiasm that walked through the door following the Make It day was amazing…I heard stories being told about it throughout the factory. Keep up the excellent work” Dawn Gibbins MBE, Chairman, Flowcrete Group plc

Manufacturing & Engineering Zone at Skills NW

Skills NorthWest is the largest interactive skills and careers fair in the region. Lasting 3-days it attracts 20,000 visitors and offers an unrivalled atmosphere of inspiration and motivation. It includes ‘hands on’ skills activities for thousands of young people to ‘have a go’ and get a real taste of future career opportunities and gain understanding of the range of options available to them.

The 2007 Skills NorthWest event will take place at Manchester Central (formally GMEX) on November 13-15 2007 and is run in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

The Manufacturing Institute will co-ordinate the Manufacturing & Engineering Zone for a third successive year under the Make It in Manufacturing umbrella. The stand measures 240 square feet and includes a range of activities devised by manufacturing partners including electronic badge soldering, making metal aeroplanes, mixing hair gel, plastics moulding, robotics and laser cutting.

“The planning and organisation were faultless, and the stand itself was excellent. The attendees were clearly drawn to the stand, and the variety and content of the individual pods ensured that the children and teachers spent a lot of time exploring the many activities. Count us in for next year.” Brian Barker, Training & Development Manager, Unison Engine Components

Teacher Placements

Following the successful teacher placement days at Smiths Aerospace and Aegis Engineering earlier this year The Manufacturing Institute, in conjunction with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, will once again be running a series of industry days for teachers of manufacturing and engineering during 2008.
