Why Encourage Your Students to MAKE IT in Manufacturing?

Everyone in manufacturing recognises that there is a huge amount of competition for the hearts and minds of young people when it comes to choosing career routes. Manufacturers are not unique in their desire to attract highly skilled, highly motivated young people into their businesses but skill shortages are perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing the sector today – and in the UK, a thriving manufacturing sector is crucial to the success of the wider economy.

In the Make It campaign, The Manufacturing Institute has teamed up with representatives of the manufacturing sector to try to overturn years of depressing portrayals in TV programmes and in news headlines to demonstrate that modern manufacturing is an exciting and rewarding career destination.

For many teachers, parents and members of the general public – and consequently young people – the word manufacturing conjures up images of dirty and noisy factory environments with boring, repetitive unskilled work. This is simply not the world of modern manufacturing.

The ‘enterprise culture’ lies at the heart of manufacturing in a fiercely-competitive global marketplace. Innovation is a must. International communication and relationships are the norm. Qualifications and experience are portable – from the automotive sector to the aerospace sector; from the manufacture of food and drink products to the development of the latest ‘intelligent’ textiles.

This website aims to provide more information about the host of diverse opportunities that exist for exciting, diverse and rewarding careers – both intellectually and in monetary terms – in the UK and beyond.
